HOLY OR WHOLLY?

John 17:14-20
“I have given them your message. But the world has hated them because they don’t belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. I’m not asking you to take them out of the world but to protect them from the evil one. They don’t belong to the world any more than I belong to the world

“Use the truth to make them holy. Your words are truth. I have sent them into the world the same way you sent me into the world. I’m dedicating myself to this holy work I’m doing for them so that they, too, will use the truth to be holy.

“I’m not praying only for them. I’m also praying for those who will believe in me through their message.”

This scripture reading is part of a longer prayer where Jesus speaks to the father on behalf of his followers then and in the future. He makes it clear that he does not want them (us) to be removed from the world at that time when he would be removed from the world.

His followers are the remain in the world but also remain separate from the world. Not wholly in the world but holy in the world.

God’s truth found in His holy word, the Bible, is to be our guide. We are to continue and complete the mission that He gave us. That is the mission to bring others into a right relationship with God.

Wholly or holy, which path will you follow?
