John 5:8-11
Jesus told the man, ” The man immediately became well, picked up his cot, and walked. That happened on a day of worship. So the Jews told the man who had been healed, “This is a day of worship. You’re not allowed to carry your cot today.” The man replied, “The man who made me well told me to pick up my cot and walk.”

For 38 years this man has been trying in his own power to be healed. It hasn’t worked and no one was willing to help him.

And then a stranger said to him, “Get up, pick up your cot, and walk.” And get up and walk he did. He obeyed the voice of command.

He picked up his cot and walked only to be stopped by the religious leaders. It was the Sabbath and no work was to be done. He was carrying his bed which was work. When questioned, he replied, The man who made me well told me to pick up my cot and walk.”

The man didn’t know that he head meet the Lord of the Sabbath*. He only knew that, with a word, he had been healed. He only knew that the one who had had released him, ordered him to pick up his cot. Why would he disobey the authority of such a powerful person? He could not and would not just to follow the rules of the religious authority. An authority that cared less for a man’s life long suffering than for their narrow interpretation of the Commandments.

Whose authority do you follow?

*Matthew 12:1-8, Mark 2:23-28 and Luke 6:1-5.
