MUSINGS – November 10, 2018

Mark 10:42-45
Jesus called the apostles and said, “You know that the acknowledged rulers of nations have absolute power over people and their officials have absolute authority over people. But that’s not the way it’s going to be among you. Whoever wants to become great among you will be your servant. Whoever wants to be most important among you will be a slave for everyone. It’s the same way with the Son of Man. He didn’t come so that others could serve him. He came to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many people.”

Just a very short time ago James and John asked Jesus to give them special leadership positions. When he said, “You will be a slave because of for everyone,” it must have stung them.

Jesus had called them Sons of Thunder for their boldness. Luke 9:54 gives an insight into the character of these men. They were with Jesus when they passed through Samaria on the way to Jerusalem. Because of the animosity between Jews and Samaritans Jesus was not welcomed to spend the night in a Samaritan town.
James and John, his disciples, saw this. They asked, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to burn them up?” He reputed them for thinking that. How it must have humbled these proud men to be told they were the be slaves to everyone. How much does it humble us to be told the same thing?
