TRAINING PRACTICE

Mark 14:27-31
Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will abandon me. Scripture says, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ “But after I am brought back to life, I will go to Galilee ahead of you.” Peter said to him, “Even if everyone else abandons you, I won’t.” Jesus said to Peter, “I can guarantee this truth: Tonight, before a rooster crows twice, you will say three in my times that you don’t know me.” But Peter said very strongly, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never say that I don’t know you.” All the other disciples said the same thing.

When push comes to shove, when the pressure is on; when the situation is critical or urgent; when the time has come for action, none of us can guarantee how we will react.

These 11 men were not cowards. They loved Jesus and truly believed that when their time if testing came, they would stand by him even if it cost them their life. But they were wrong, as we’ll soon see as we read further in Mark.

When I was training in martial arts, we would practice the same moves over and over. The purpose of the training was to develope muscle memory. Literally we were training our bodies to react without our conscious thought.

I believe we can train ourselves to not deny Jesus in times of trial by standing up for him every day.
