Faith and Righteousness

MUSINGS

Galatians 3:10-12
Certainly, there is a curse on all who rely on their own efforts to live according to a set of standards because Scripture says, “Whoever doesn’t obey everything that is written in Moses’ Teachings is cursed.” No one receives God’s approval by obeying the law’s standards since, “The person who has God’s approval will live by faith.” Laws have nothing to do with faith, but, “Whoever obeys laws will live because of the laws he obeys.”
“I’m not ashamed of the Good News. It is God’s power to save everyone who believes, Jews first and Greeks as well. God’s approval is revealed in this Good News. This approval begins and ends with faith as Scripture says, “The person who has God’s approval will live by faith.”

The apostle Paul believed the importance of this message Thad that he repeated it in his kg letter to the church in Galatia.

Paul twice quotes the prophet Habakkuk (2:4) “Look at the proud person. He is not right in himself. But the righteous person will live because of his faithfulness.

In the letter to th the Philippians (3:5-8) Paul saddle oh of himself, “I was circumcised on the eighth day. I’m a descendant of Israel. I’m from the tribe of Benjamin. I’m a pure-blooded Hebrew. When it comes to living up to standards, I was a Pharisee. When it comes to being enthusiastic, I was a persecutor of the church. When it comes to winning God’s approval by keeping Jewish laws, I was perfect. These things that I once considered valuable, I now consider worthless for Christ. It’s far more than that! I consider everything else worthless because I’m much better off knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. It’s because of him that I think of everything as worthless. I threw it all away in order to gain Christ.”

So Paul, formerly a strict adherent to the Law of Moses, can came to believe a couple of in important ideas.

  1. If we live by the law and fail, in even the smallest point, we are cursed as if we had failed them all.
  2. It is impossible for us to keep the Law.
  3. We can not make ourselves righteous in the sight of God.
  4. But by faith in Jesus Christ, we will be covered by Christ’s own righteousness.

Prayer

Lord, we have struggled to live what we considered to be a good life. And even by our own standards we have failed. We at are not the good we sought to be. We now give our lives completely to you. We believe in in the righteousness of Your Son Jesus and his ability to make us righteous. Amen.
