My People Do not Know

Jeremiah 8:4-7

4 You shall say to them, Thus
says the Lord: When people fall,
do they not get up again? If
they go astray, do they not turn
back? 5 Why then has this
people turned away in
perpetual backsliding? They
have held fast to deceit, they
have refused to return. 6 I have
given heed and listened, but
they do not speak honestly; no
one repents of wickedness,
saying, “What have I done!” All
of them turn to their own
course, like a horse plunging
headlong into battle. 7 Even the
stork in the heavens knows its
times; and the turtledove,
swallow, and crane observe the
time of their coming; but my
people do not know the
ordinance of the Lord.

It seems incredible to me that,
when people are offered
salvation, that they refuse to
take hold of it. Imagine a
person struggling to stay afloat
in the middle of the ocean. A
passing boat stops and tosses
him a flotation device. He
shakes his head and declares,
“I can do it myself, I’ll just
swim you shore!”

Or imagine a person in a
burning building, calmly
sitting in an easy chair,
oblivious to the flames. A
fireman pushes through the
inferno only to be told, “No, I
don’t want your help and I
don’t believe in your fire.”

As incredibly stupid as it is to
think these events could really
happen, every day, all over the
world, people reject the word
of God and the Word of God in
the person of Jesus of
Nazareth.

Prayer

Living, loving, God, thank you
for Jesus who died that we
might live. Help us to
demonstrate to non-believers
that they can neither save
themselves not, by inaction,
make the reality less true.

Amen.
