1st Century Internet?

2 Thessalonians 2:1-2

As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here.

1st Century Internet?

In his second letter to the Christians in Thessalonica, capital of the Roman province of Macedon (modern day Greece). Paul is attempting to correct misinformation (fake news) that had been circulating within the community. I couldn’t help but think of our current source of the greatest misinformation, the world wide web. As an example here it’s some fake news that I’ve seen posted and reposted on Facebook. Remember, do not get excited about this “great discovery”. It was originally posted as satire. Ready? Here is the fake news that keeps being spread.

  • Egypt’s Antiquities Ministry announced this morning that a team of underwater archaeologists had discovered that remains of a large Egyptian army from the 14th century BC, at the bottom of the Gulf of Suez, 1.5 kilometers offshore from the modern city of Ras Gharib. The team was searching for the remains of ancient ships and artefacts related to Stone Age and Bronze Age trade in the Red Sea area, when they stumbled upon a gigantic mass of human bones darkened by age. Scientists lead by Professor Abdel Muhammad Gader and associated with Cairo University’s Faculty of Archaeology, have already recovered a total of more than 400 different skeletons, as well as hundreds of weapons and pieces of armor, also the remains of two war chariots, scattered over an area of approximately 200 square meters. They estimate that more than 5000 other bodies could be dispersed over a wider area, suggesting that an army of large size who have perished on the site.”

Though I would be delighted if this report were real – it isn’t. It was created by World News Daily Report which is a fake news site whose disclaimer notes that the site’s articles are satirical in nature. And yet it it keeps being repeated as truth.

Paul was battling against the same sort of lies being told to the Thessalonians. There were rumors being told that Jesus had returned to earth with an army of angels and gathering to himself the believers.

Remember, Brothers and Sisters, you must stay grounded in the scriptures to avoid being mislead by cunning falsehood. Do not rely on  me or anyone else without prayerfully reading (for understanding) the Holy scriptures. It is your eternal soul at stake so,Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness.” (2. Ephesians 6:14)

God, we your children are sometimes like reeds in the wind, blown this way and that. The Great Deceiver, the Father of Lies, is constantly tempting us with lies and half truths. Give us wisdom and discernment. Fill us so full of your Holy Spirit that there is no room for the devil’s deceits to enter.
