The Just Judge

Isaiah 11:1-5

Then a shoot will come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from its roots will bear fruit. The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him– the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of advice and power, the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD. He will gladly bear the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what his eyes see or decide by what his ears hear. He will judge the poor justly. He will make fair decisions for the humble people on earth. He will strike the earth with a rod from his mouth. He will kill the wicked with the breath from his lips. Justice will be the belt around his waist. Faithfulness will be the belt around his hips.

About 740 years before Christ was born, Isaiah prophecied that an honest and just judge would come. He would have the:

  • Spirit of the Lord
  • Spirit of wisdom
  • Spirit of understanding,
  • Spirit of advice
  • Spirit of power,
  • Spirit of knowledge
  • fear of the LORD

and he would judge not with his eyes or ears.

Jesus came and judges people by what was in their hearts/minds. (Matt. 0:4, 12:25,  Luke 5:2)

The laws that men make vary from locations to location and change over time. The law of God is constant but is also tempered with mercy. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing.” (Luke 23:24) He who was the just judge made a way to forgiveness for all wrongs.

Lord, we praise you for your wisdom, understanding, advice, power, knowledge, and justice. But above all we thank you for your mercy.
