Give Thanks

Ephesians 5:15-20
So then, be very careful how you live. Don’t live like foolish people but like wise people. Make the most of your opportunities because these are evil days. So don’t be foolish, but understand what the Lord wants. Don’t get drunk on wine, which leads to wild living. Instead, be filled with the Spirit by reciting psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs for your own good. Sing and make music to the Lord with your hearts. Always thank God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Give Thanks
Every Tuesday evening our church opens the doors to the 150 year old chapel for prayers and hymn singing. It is a great time of sharing our joys and concerns. I always leave refreshed and renewed. There is power in being filled with the Spirit by reciting psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs for your own good.

Prayer
Father, what a blessing we receive when we gather together in your house and share in worship. Thank you for inspiring so many writers of scriptures, psalms, and hymns. Thank you for your words.
Amen.

Praise the Lord

Psalm 145:1-6
I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever.

Every day I will bless you,

and praise your name forever and ever.
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; his greatness is unsearchable.
One generation shall laud your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.
On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
The might of your awesome deeds shall be proclaimed, and I will declare your greatness.

Praise the Lord

I often forget to just stop and praise the Lord.

A.C.T.S is a prayer guide.
  • Adoration: Give God praise and honor for who he is as Lord over all.
  • Confession: Honestly deal with the sin in your prayer life.
  • Thanksgiving: Verbalize what you’re grateful for in your life and in the world around you.
  • Supplication: Pray for the needs of others and yourself.

This is a useful guide to help organize your thoughts on prayer. However, sometimes I know I need to slow down and just say and sing praises to my Lord. I don’t want to be the child who only calls Dad when I need something. The psalms are a great way to train yourself in the ways of adoration.

Prayer:

I love you, my God and King, I will proclaim that you are very glorious; I will praise you now and forever. Every day I will praise you; Yes, I will praise you forever. Lord, you are great, and you deserve to be praised.  All people should praise you. We cannot fully realize how great you are. Amen.

Death Has No Hold on Us

Hebrews 2:14-18

Therefore, because children have a common flesh and blood, he himself also, in like manner, has shared in the same, so that through death, he might destroy him who held the dominion of death, that is, the devil, and so that he might free those who, through the fear of death, had been condemned to servitude throughout their entire life. For at no time did he take hold of the Angels, but instead he took hold of the offspring of Abraham. Therefore, it is fitting for him to be made similar to his brothers in all things, so that he might become a merciful and faithful High Priest before God, in order that he might bring forgiveness to the offenses of the people. For in as much as he himself has suffered and has been tempted, he also is able to assist those who are tempted.

Death Has No Hold on Us

We humans are all God’s children. And we have feared death because the devil has used lies and trickery to make us believe that death is the end of life.

However, Christ became human in order that, by his death and resurrection, he might take the power of fear away from the devil by exposing that lie. Death is not the end of life. It is only a doorway into eternal life for we who trust God as Abraham did.

Prayer:

We, your children, often fear the unknown and death has always been the greatest unknown. Thank you, Lord, that you have not given us the spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (2 Tim. 1:7) You have given us the assurance of a glorified life with you for all eternity. We will sing praises to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

  • Tough Love

    2 Thessalonians 3:14-15

Take note of those who do not obey what we say in this letter; have nothing to do with them, so that they may be ashamed.  Do not regard them as enemies, but warn them as believers.

    Tough love

Paul was advising his readers to apply tough love to those believers who were not following his commandments. It reminds me of being a parent. You love your children and want to be their friend and play with them. But at the same time, you have a duty to train them up to be responsible adults who contribute to society rather than a drain on their community..

In like manner, the more mature in Christ must take a leadership role in guiding and strengthening those weaker in the faith. And sometimes that means not being their “buddy,” but being their true friend and warning then of their errors.

    Prayer:

Holy Spirit, be my guide. When I all weak let me take good instruction from the strong. When I am strong, help me, in love, lift the weak among us.

    Amen.

  • Prophesies

    Luke 21:5-19
When some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, he said, ““As for these things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another; all will be thrown down.”

They asked him, “Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign that this is about to take place?”

And he said,“Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is near!’ Do not go after them. “When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately.”

    Then he said to them,

“Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues; and there will be dreadful portents and great signs from heaven. “But before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you; they will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name. This will give you an opportunity to testify. So make up your minds not to prepare your defense in advance; for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your souls.”

    Prophesies

I have a confession to make,: I hate prophesies. I’m not good at understanding them. The only way to determine if a prophecy is true, is after it has be fulfilled. And even then you can be left wondering, was this THE event prophesied about or will there still another event yet to come that will be the REAL fulfillment?

Some of what Jesus said had come true; and some almost immediately. The apostles were nearly all handed over to be exceeded for teaching about Jesus. The temple was destroyed within the lifetime of many of his listeners.
Wars and famines as well as earthquakes and floods have always been with us. So how are we to know?
We aren’t supposed to know the WHEN.  That’s the point of what Jesus was saying. What we are supposed to be doing is staying strong in the faith even when persecuted, even to death.

    Prayer:
Lord, you know that your children always want to know every twist and turn of the road before we even take that first step. Give it’s the courage and trust to keep moving forward, under your guidance, even when we can’t we where to place our foot in the next step.
    Amen.

    Bookends of Love

    John 14:15-21

If you love me, you will obey my commandments. I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper who will be with you forever. That helper is the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept him, because it doesn’t see or know him. You know him, because he lives with you and will be in you. “I will not leave you all alone. I will come back to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. You will live because I live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father and that you are in me and that I am in you. Whoever knows and obeys my commandments is the person who loves me. Those who love me will have my Father’s love, and I, too, will love them and show myself to them.”

    Bookends of Love

In this brief section of Jesus’s teaching and instruction to his apostles and disciples, he links love and commandments twice: “If you love me, you will obey my commandments” and “Whoever knows and obeys my commandments is the person who loves me.”  I found it interesting that love came both before and after the commandments. It was as if they we wrapped in love. Love is the reason for obeying his commandments and obeying his commandments is proof of our love.

    Prayer:

Jesus, lover of my soul, I love you more than anything that this world had to offer. Your commandments are simple to understand but, sometimes, difficult to follow. Thank you for the Spirit of Truth that you have given us to guide our steps through this ungodly world.

    Amen.
