MUSINGS – January 10, 2019

Matthew 6:1-4
Be careful not to do your good works in public in order to attract attention. If you do, your Father in heaven will not reward you. So when you give to the poor, don’t announce it with trumpet fanfare. This is what hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets in order to be praised by people. I can guarantee this truth: That will be their only reward. When you give to the poor, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Give your contributions privately. Your Father sees what you do in private. He will reward you.

My wife and I live on a fixed income with some additional seasonal, part-time income. We still manage to support the ministries of our church. We still manage to donate to the food pantry. We assemble and hand out bags with food and other items to those who beg on street corners.

Now that I’ve told you this, have I lost my heavenly reward? I don’t believe so because, even though my left hand side knows what my right hand is doing, I haven’t told you this to earn your praise. I’ve told you only so that you are aware that there are simple ways to give to the poor other than through those “charities” that spend millions of dollars in advertising to tug at your heart strings (and purse strings).

Give what you can as though you were giving it to Jesus and you can still take the tax write-off with God’s approval.
